Driving collaboration in the Global South to develop affordable and accessible diagnostics
What is the South-South Diagnostic Alliance?
The South-South Diagnostic Alliance is a collaborative platform designed to catalyse cross-sector and cross-regional partnerships in countries where diseases are endemic. By fostering cooperation among governments, industry, academia, and civil society, the Alliance aims to develop and deliver affordable, accessible diagnostics and therapeutic solutions tailored to the specific needs of these regions. Clinical Research Malaysia (CRM), which incubates and supports the initiative, has appointed Woodseer Resources to serve as the Alliance secretariat and take the lead.
Turning the Tables
At the heart of our work is a commitment to reshaping traditional power dynamics in medical research and development. 'Turning the tables' means placing endemic countries at the centre of the conversation—where they lead, shape, and influence the direction of global health innovation. We believe that specialists in endemic regions are best positioned to understand the needs of their patients and health systems. By restructuring leadership models to prioritize their voices, we ensure that diagnostics and therapeutics are locally relevant, responsive, and sustainable.
What We Do
Develop and Deliver Solutions
Affordable and accessible diagnostics and therapeutics for diseases affecting endemic countries.
Catalyse Innovation
Facilitate collaboration across sectors and borders to create locally relevant, scalable solutions in endemic countries.
Strengthen Local Ecosystem
Enable knowledge sharing to promote healthcare and research infrastructure in endemic regions to support long-term sustainability.
Empower Endemic Countries
Ensure researchers in endemic countries are in the driving seat of global medical research.
Current Project
The Alliance is launching its first initiative with a focus on dengue diagnostics, marking a critical step toward addressing neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that continue to burden communities across the Global South.
Recognizing that diagnostics and treatment must go hand in hand, our initial project prioritizes the development of affordable, accessible, and locally relevant diagnostic tools. In particular, we aim to improve early detection and monitoring through the exploration of biomarkers for severe dengue, which is critical for timely intervention and reducing mortality.
By starting with dengue, the Alliance not only establishes a framework for expanding into broader solutions for other high-burden diseases, but the project sets the tone for how we approach all our initiatives: driven by local expertise, aligned with real-world needs, and focused on long-term impact.
